What is the CRF?

Prince Edward Island Beverage Container Stewardship Program

Container Recycling Fee (CRF)

Since April 1, 2026, as per the province’s Environmental Protection Act Materials Stewardship and Recycling Regulations, the Beverage Container Stewardship Program in PEI operates under a non-profit, producer-operated model.

To assist in meeting environmental performance objectives, a container recycling fee (CRF) (also known as an “eco-fee”) is imposed on beverage product producers, which helps recover the costs of collecting, processing, and sending deposit-bearing beverage containers to facilities for recycling.

Producers can recover these costs by passing them on to retailers, who may, in turn, pass them on to consumers. As a result, CRFs may appear on receipts as an additional fee at the point of purchase, or they may be included in the overall price of certain beverage products.

CRFs are adjusted annually, with new rates typically taking effect on April 1 each year. Changes to CRFs are announced at least 90 days prior to their effective date.

Refer to the table below for the current CRFs on beverage containers in PEI.

* Some beverage producers and retailers may choose to absorb the cost of the CRF, instead of passing it on to consumers. In these instances, the total cost to consumers is $0.00 (if the container is returned for a refund).
